Theatre Company of LeeQingZhao the Private

Theatre Company of LeeQingZhao the Private(abbr. LQZ)Small Theatre Troupe,  Ai Yan Tian Tuan (sorrow and glamorous troupe), was founded in January 2006.  Using the name of Song Dynasty poet, Lee Qing-Zhao, it re-opens new frontiers in customs and elegance in contemporary performance art.  Through repeated exposure of modern and traditional political taboos, LQZ points out a cultural practice consisting of melancholic, but beautiful strands.   In recent years, its productions, such as Bai Suzhen, Elope, Cao Qiqiao, Auntie, Liu Sanmei, Chen Qingyang, Summer Green, Colorless Color, mark bold forays into Beijing opera, Hakka opera, Taiwanese opera, kabuki, and other forms of traditional opera.  The music and literature of the works are highly original, and their overall visuals are charming and varied.   Over the past few years, LQZ has conducted more than 70 performances in cities across the world, including Taipei, Beijing, Shanghai, and Tokyo.  It has been nominated as one of the nine major performing arts productions in the 2006 Taishin Arts Award.  Additionally, it was nominated for Best Crossover Album, Best Crossover Producer, and Best Arrangement in the Traditional Music category for the 2007 Golden Melody Awards.  And, in 2008, it won the Golden Bell Award for Best Art and Design.

Yu-Chuan TSENG |Project Host

Digital artist with Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) from New York University in the USA and PhD from the Institute of Applied Arts at National Chiao Tung University.  Currently, Tseng teaches at the Department of Public Relations and Advertising at Shih Hsin University, and serves as vice president for the Women’s Art Association, supervisor for the Digital Art Foundation, and director for Taiwan Information Design, Art, Technology, Education Association.  Tseng has held exhibitions at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Hong-gah Museum, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Singapore’s Art Gallery of LASALLE-SIA, and other venues.  Tseng’s works have been presented at the ACM Multimedia International Conference, International Symposium on Electronic Arts (ISEA), and in the international periodical, Leonardo.

Chien-Wei WU |Main Performer/Choreographer

Wu’s 2008 work, Aurora, won the Jury Prize in the Australian Choreographic Competition 2008.  In 2010, Wu became a professional dancer for the Taipei Crossover Dance Company and participated in the group’s 15th anniversary performance of Huan-Hsiung Li’s Time Hostel.  In 2011, he went with the Taipei Crossover Dance Company to attend Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in the United States and perform Hsiao-Hsiong Chang’s Dreams of a Butterfly and Rain.  Wu later joined the production, The Poignant Obscene Artifact Part 1:Marie Educates His Son at Virgin Flower Falling, by LQZ and took on the role of Monshiro.  After a solo dance performance in Beijing in May, he was immediately invited to the 8th Guangdong Modern Dance Festival and conducted a solo performance of the work, Soliloquy.  In August, Wu independently organized a personal photography, dance, and text exhibition, Soliloquy, at Grass Mountain Artist Village.  

Santiago LATORRE|Composer, Sound Designer

Spanish composer, Santiago Latorre, began composing music for dance, theater, and video art projects in 2005.  A few years later, he released his first album, Órbita, under the Californian label Accretions.  He has toured in the U.S.A., Mexico, Japan, and China, and has performed in some of the most important festivals in Spain, like Sónar and LEM. Currently, he just releases the album, Eclíptica, with Foehn Records.

Liang-Yen LIU|Director

Poet, theatre director, actor, producer.  Currently, Liu serves as representative and artistic director for LQZ, and director of Taipei Union for Professional Artists.  Born in 1979 in Taitung, Taiwan and of Hakka descent, Liu graduated from National Dong Hwa University’s Department of English and the Institute of Applied Arts at National Chiao Tung University.  Enrolled in the doctoral program at the National Chiao Tung University Degree Program of Society and Culture since 2006, Liu has focused his research on Shuji Terayama.

Kuan-Ying WU |Interactive Design and Integration Programer

Currently enrolled in doctoral program for the Graduate Institute of Architecture at National Chiao Tung University, Wu also works as a part-time designer for Mu-Tien-Liao Interactive dot TW.  Wu utilizes programming and electronic circuits to materialize realistic imaginations and futuristic fantasies about the world, while favoring the combination of mechanical power, the shaping of and immersion into space, and the real-time performance of live music and images.

Chi-Ping CHIN | Interactive Image Programer

Graduated from National Chiao Tung University, Graduate Institute of Architecture, Chin is currently a designer at Mu-Tien-Liao Interactive dot TW and part-time lecturer at Ming Dao University’s Department of Digital Design.  Through the sensitivity and methods of artists, Mu-Tien-Liao presents a world built by knowledge to seek interactive x technology x video x art x design… It is a search for utopia.

Yi-Ching HUANG | iPhone App Programer

Huang is currently studying at National Taiwan University’s Graduate Institute of Networking and Multimedia, where she majors in artificial intelligence, social computing, semantic analysis, interaction design, and data visualization.  Huang holds a passion for uncovering the relationships and stories behind large amounts of data.  From various perspectives, she ponders about the connections between people and people, people and objects, and objects and objects, as well as their correlations over time.  She then applies these findings into many aspects of her works.  Deeply passionate about combining art with technology, Huang chose to participate in this event without hesitation.

Chia-Hui CHEN | Stage Design

Chen is a freelance designer who specializes in spatial planning and visual design.  Her works include stage design, installation, modeling design, puppet design, animation, picture books, and more.  Chen graduated from Taipei National University of the Arts’ Department of Theatre Design and Technology.  Her recent stage design works include Germination (selected for Prague Quadrennial 2007), See You in the Air Tomorrow (Shanghai Theatre Expo Art Festival),   April Rain (Musical at All Music Theatre), The Silent Left Hand (Against Again Troupe), 24H – I Do Not Exist in Existing Places (New Wave Guling), and more.

Wei-Ting CHEN | Director of Interactive Engineering

Chen graduated from National Cheng Kung University’s Department of Architecture, and obtained his master’s degree in Visual Communication Design from the Institute of Applied Arts at National Chiao Tung University.  Chen’s designs have been featured in many digital art exhibitions.  Chen has collaborated with Story Nest’s HUANG Hsin-Chien and TSENG Yu-Chuan, Association of the Visual Arts in Taiwan Information Design, Art, Technology, Education Association, Taipei Women’s Rescue Foundation, and Jing-Mei Human Rights Memorial & Culture Park.  Chen also took on various projects curated by L’orangerie International Art Consultant Co, Ltd., for which he designed and planned interactive installations for public artworks and exhibitions.

Chen-Hsuan LIN|Graphic Design

Chen is currently in her third year studying at the Department of Digital Design at Ming Dao University.  Chen utilizes unique creative ideas to strive forward in this highly competitive society through outstanding 3D productions, cartoon illustrations, animations, and participation in physical performance events.  Lin created Secret Garden in the Palm of the Hand, which conveyed emotions through the incorporation of interactive technologies into doorknob designs.

A transdiscipline project [Dinner of Luciérnaga]

This piece was awarded with funding from the Council for Cultural Affairs’ 2011 fund for transdiscipline performing arts that involve technology.  The show premiered on September 22, 2011, at Quanta Art Foundation’s Quanta Hall.

InterPlay with iPhone


Generally, audience watchs the performance and receive message passively in digital performance. In this project, we try to create an interactive performance which people can interact with dancer using their mobile phones. We develop an iPhone app named as Luciérnaga which is available in the iTune Store. For Luciérnaga app, it’s an light storage which people can use camera to capture the light in real life and play with the light ball in their iPhones. In the theater, people can use their iPhones to take part in the performance. They can control the objects in the stage and generate special sounds to create a soundscape with others in live performance. Therefore, Luciérnaga app is a medium between audience and performance.


We set up a local wireless network and arrange the 8 different zones in the theater. Audience can connect to our control server based on a unique number when entering the theater. For iphone app, we analyze the captured pictures and change the size of light ball based on the brightness. We design a special sound for iphone app. It can generate an interesting sound based on the change of different gestures, accelerometers and size of light ball. For control server, we monitor the connecting status for each iphone and send different commands to trigger different sound effects and music. In 8 zones, iphone would generate different sounds with different volume and order. All of them would collaborate with each others and create a special sound experience in the performance.


We generate real-time animation by an open source programming language which is called Processing.

In order to create better translation of actions into image, a Kinect sets upon dancer to detect movement and get position information. All the image effects are realtime system controlled by dancer movement.

In order to increase the projection area on the stage, we use picture-frame stage design. It makes three projection areas which are floor, background screen, and frames. Three projectors are connected to three computers separately but synchronous operation. Each computer is a sender and receiver simultaneously. Open sound control protocols are used to communicate with each other. This type of system framework can synchronize visual generation, sounds, and iPhone control.

The digital performance [Dinner of Luciérnaga] is a transdiscipline project. It was created by more than 10 talented members, including dancer, Choreographer, artists, interactive designers, sound designer, engineers, director, stage designer and light engerineer. The ides of [Dinner of Luciérnaga] is a story about the relationship between light and human. How we depend on light in everyday life? In the visual perception, what we see is the photoreceptor neurons in the retina collect the light and send signals to a network of neurons that then process those impulses and gives information about what we are seeing. In digital era, we sit in front of the computer, access the information thought the light(monitor).


We use the term “Luciérnaga” as a metaphor, indicating the human lived with light. The “Luciérnaga” is a firefly, is light, is us. Therefore, the [Dinner of Luciérnaga] is a story about light as resource of energy resembling as food. The light is the elements to construct a kitchen. In the kitchen we cook our meal with light. Eventually, it is a dinner with self.

In this performance, dancer plays with light dots. The interaction between dancer and light presented the relations disputes. The light dots are the representation of audience on scene. We created a interactive interface – [Luciérnaga] to invited audience to become parts of the performance image on the stage.It is a simple iPhone App game to capture light. Before entering the theater, the audiences need to download the app.

The play included five parts and 50 min length.

1. When audience in the theater, they are asked to login the network. When the signal connected, the audiences become one of the light dot presenting on the stage. The more photos taking, the light dot bigger. The audiences can control their own lights by waving the iphone. When the phone waving, the sound playied according to the direction and force of shaking.

2.The dancer plays with light in the mode of push, adhesion and integration. The relation between dancer and light are mixed feelings. He plays with light, but also try to escape from light.

3. However, The light is inescapable. It becomes the elements to build up one’s own kitchen.The dancer constructs kitchen with the light and creates a blueprint kitchen.

4. In the kitchen, dancer cooks it own’s dinner waiting for someone to have dinner with him but no one came.In the process of cooking, the music pieces are sent to all the audience’s iPhone and creates a surround sound effect. The images of creature such cat, butterfly show and disappear on the stage and then appear in the audience’s iPhone. In the final, the virual man walks to the audience iPhone and breaks up into fragmentation

5. Finally, it is still a dinner with self, the virtural world collapsed. The projection image of virtural world are falling apart, and the real objects of paper scraps are pouring down. It is one’s inner world, we swing and squeeze in the real and virtual world.


In the process of creation and Cooperation, we are in the search for new communication for differece region and new form of theatrical expression. When you enter the theatre hall with iPhone and take part with the performance. You are not just a viewer but become one of the performance. The interactive process thought iphone is a experiment. With the interface of personal device, we wish to create a brave new theatrical experience.
